General:
Perennial, strawberry-like herb from fibrous root and short rhizome, with long slender stolons; stems trailing, freely rooting at the nodes, with coarse to silky, appressed hairs.
Leaves:
Basal in rosettes and alternate on the stolons, long-stalked, palmately compound; leaflets 3, elliptic-egg-shaped, 2-4 cm long, coarse-toothed.
Flowers:
Single on long (2-12 cm) stalks from the leaf axils; corollas yellow, the petals 5, oblong-egg-shaped, 3-7 mm long, soon deciduous; calyces 4-10 mm long, 5-lobed, the lobes alternating with 3- (to 5)-toothed, much longer bractlets; ovaries superior; stamens 20 to 25.
Fruits:
Strawberry-like, the receptacle enlarged, red, globe-shaped, about 1 cm in diameter, pithy, tasteless, covered with achenes; achenes numerous, reddish, 1-1.5 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Moist open forests and waste places in the lowland zone; rare in SW BC; introduced from Asia.
